Resiliency is not only about withstanding disruption. It is about creating the conditions where people, communities, and economies can thrive in the face of change. This belief has guided David Sellers’ life and career, and it defines his approach to architecture and leadership.

Professional Journey

David’s path to architecture began far from a traditional studio setting- it began at sea.

Before becoming an architect, David worked aboard commercial fishing vessels in Alaska as a ship’s engineer to finance his architectural education. Living and working in remote, high-risk environments instilled an early understanding that systems matter. Energy, water, waste, and power are not abstract ideas; they are lifelines. That hands-on experience shaped David’s systems-based approach to buildings as living, interdependent environments that must perform reliably under real-world conditions.

After earning his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University, David completed a master’s degree in Architecture, Urbanism, and Building Science at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. A decade of living and working abroad gave him a global perspective on how design responds to climate, culture, and resource realities.

Leaving the Netherlands, David moved to Hawaiʻi and joined The Nature Conservancy, where he spearheaded operations at Palmyra Atoll, a remote conservation research station, and led the transition from diesel generators to a renewable microgrid. The project demonstrated the economic and environmental value of renewable systems, saving more than $1 million annually while improving operational resilience.

David as an Architect

David is the Principal of Hawaiʻi Off-Grid Architecture + Engineering, a multidisciplinary firm nationally recognized for advancing net-zero, resilient, and regenerative design. In 2015, the firm became the first in the world to require all new projects to meet net-zero energy goals at a minimum -a professional standard rooted in accountability and performance.

His work spans high-performance housing, community infrastructure, and disaster recovery. Following the Lahaina wildfires, David completed AIA’s Safety Assessment Program training, served as a county deputized safety assessor within the burn zone, and continues to advocate for policy tools that support safe and efficient rebuilding. He led the design of several emergency housing projects for displaced residents, such as the off-grid Ohana Hope Village, reinforcing his belief that architecture must serve people first, especially in times of crisis.

Service and mentorship

David believes prosperity is shared and that the profession grows stronger when opportunity expands.

He serves on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity Maui and supports affordable housing and homelessness initiatives through professional and pro bono work. Deeply committed to mentorship and education, David serves as Board Chair of the Industrial Engineering Academy at Maui High School and fully supports licensure, education, and AIA membership for emerging professionals within his firm.

Within AIA, David has served as Past President of AIA Maui and currently serves on the AIA Hawaiʻi State Council Board. His advocacy at AIA Leadership Summits has focused on elevating architects as leaders in climate action, resilience planning, and equitable community development.

Mission

Prosperity Through Resiliency means designing communities that are stronger, more adaptable, and more equitable. It recognizes that climate action, housing stability, and economic vitality are interconnected; and that architects have a responsibility to lead across all three.

As an AIA leader, David’s mission is to help the profession move from reacting to change to shaping it, ensuring architects have the knowledge, voice, and support needed to create lasting value for the communities they serve.
